Dear RC17 members,
With our December newsletter in 2019 we want to send you our best wishes for the upcoming holidays and New Year’s Eve, and a healthy and a successful year 2020!
We are looking forward to the IV ISA Forum of Sociology that will take place in July 2020 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. RC17 will feature a diverse program with various sessions and formats. We will organize 7 regular RC17 sessions, and 6 joint sessions with other RCs. Because of the overwhelming number of more than a hundred abstract submissions, we will also have 2 additional sessions running parallelly in two different rooms. RC17 will moreover offer a “Writing for Publication in Organization Studies” workshop that is open to anyone interested. Last but not least, RC17 co-organizes a common session – which is one of the “big” Forum sessions – on “Climate Change and Collective Action towards Societal Transition”. The final conference program will appear next year soon. We will keep you informed and are looking forward to seeing you in Porto Alegre!

Sub-theme 55: “Tackling Societal Grand Challenges through Unconventional Forms of Organization”

Our society faces multiple global challenges such as climate change, digital workforce, algorithmization, datafication, exploitive labor, extreme poverty, gender inequality, mass migration, aging populations, or increasing disaster risks. Scholars have named such problems “grand challenges”. Grand challenges are an issue of growing importance in organization studies, and seem to both spawn and require rather fluid and unconventional forms of organization – like, e.g., partial, meta-, macro-, hybrid, multi-referential, boundary, and polyphonic organization. Our sub-theme aims at advancing this line of research. We want to explore how the mentioned as well as other unconventional forms of organization can tackle societal grand challenges and/or how grand challenges spawn the emergence of new organizational forms. Submissions can be both empirical or theoretical in nature.

For the future issues of our Newsletter, we need your contributions. We are particularly interested in contributions on:
- Relevant calls for papers for conferences, workshops, and special journal issues
- Conference and workshop reports
- New book publications
- Brief reviews of books or seminal journal articles (approx. 200-300 words)
- Reports from activities on organizational sociology in national associations
