Educational Organizations Special Interest Group

Organizations are central societal structures that shape social processes, coordinate action, and structure access to resources and opportunities. As such, they play a key role in organizing individual and collective participation, regulating interactions, and influencing life trajectories across different domains of society. While organizational perspectives have been widely applied across various fields, we see a need to further explore how these perspectives intersect with the field of education.

The Educational Organizations Special Interest Group within RC17 focuses specifically on educational organizations. Educational organizations such as kindergartens, schools, universities, and other learning environments are complex organizational settings in which formal structures, professional practices, and institutional logics interact. The Educational Organizations Special Interest Group provides a forum for the systematic integration of organizational and educational research. It brings together these perspectives while interacting and collaborating with all members of RC17.

Possible research topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Organizational structures and processes in educational organizations
  • Decision-making and governance in educational organizations
  • Policy implementation and its organizational effects
  • Organizational responses to diversity (e.g., dis/ability, gender, ethnicity, age)
  • Inclusion and exclusion processes in educational organizations
  • Intersectional analyses of inequality in educational settings and organizations
  • Professional practices and organizational cultures in education
  • Transitions within and between educational systems/organizations
  • Historical developments in and of educational organizations
  • Historically changing forms of governance of education and its effects
  • Theories of educational organizations
  • Methodological and method-related opportunities and challenges regarding educational organizations
  • Interplays between public and private actors in the field of education
